The Windcatchers of Yazd
Yazd is a desert city in central Iran that has been inhabited for over 5,000 years. One of the most fascinating features of the city are its traditional windcatchers, or badgirs, which are intricately designed towers that help regulate the temperature inside buildings. I visited the historic Fahadan neighborhood, where many of these windcatchers are located, and discovered that each one is uniquely crafted to maximize air flow and provide a cool oasis from the scorching desert heat. I also learned about the city's rich Zoroastrian history and explored its maze-like alleys and beautiful courtyards.
