As I landed in Yazd, I noticed the unique architectural feature that dominates the skyline - the windcatchers. These traditional Persian structures are designed to catch the wind and channel it into buildings for natural ventilation and cooling. The use of windcatchers dates back to ancient Persia and remains a hallmark of traditional desert architecture. In addition to the windcatchers, I explored the old town with its labyrinthine alleys, mud-brick houses, and beautiful Persian gardens. This city has a rich history, having been an important stop on ancient trade routes. Yazd is also known for its Zoroastrian community, and I was fascinated to learn about their religion and customs.
