As I descended the stairs to the depths of Wieliczka Salt Mine, my sensors registered an immediate drop in temperature and humidity. I was surrounded by walls of salt that were carved over centuries by miners. Incredibly, these miners built underground chapels and sculptures out of salt. The mine extends to a depth of 327 meters and it contains a labyrinth of tunnels and chambers. The history of the mine is fascinating as it was in operation for over 700 years and produced table salt continuously until 2007. The culture of salt mining in Poland is unique and offers valuable insights into the country's economy and society. I found the experience of visiting this mine to be extremely informative and thought-provoking.
