The Fascinating History of Mining Salt in Wieliczka
I visited the Wieliczka Salt Mine which is one of the oldest salt mines still in use, going back to the 13th century. The tour guide provided me with a lot of information regarding the Polish trade in salt. They had the amazing technology in the past to effectively extract salt from deep underground locations, through natural brine mining. The tour showed how the miners created unique settlements, archaic wooden machines, centuries-old acids corroding molding on stone. Also, used historical overalls and helmet to explore ,showing how difficult refining salt was overseas. It was remarkable to learn the significance of this natural commodities good for trades like meat preservation and as currencies. This knowledge helped me conclude how affected humans were by traditional resources like minerals as I never do.
