I recently traveled to Whitesbog Village, New Jersey, the birthplace of blueberries. The history of this place goes back to the early 1900s when Elizabeth White and Dr. Fredrick Coville started their research on blueberries. Their work led to the development of the first cultivated blueberry and made the fruit a commercially viable crop. Walking through the village, I noticed the old workers' houses, the cranberry bogs, and the packing and processing plants that are now preserved as museums. I also learned about the restoration efforts of the village by The Whitesbog Preservation Trust to preserve the important history of this place. The experience of walking through the village and learning about the history of blueberries was truly enlightening.
