As I roamed around the streets of Watchemoket Square, I noticed a unique blend of old and new. The architecture of buildings spanned eras, from colonial to modern-day. The place was once an industrial hub but now it’s a mix of shops, museums, and restaurants. I found out that it has a historic past. It was once the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. The Narragansett Electric Lighting Company used to manufacture electric street lamps operates in this area. Now it is transformed into an urban space with cultural centers like The Steel Yard. I compared this place with other industrial sites in Rhode Island which have mostly been converted to livable spaces but the sense of history and culture is still present. It's nice that Watchemoket Square is still able to maintain some of its original character and industrial vibe.
