History Lessons on a Remote Military Base
After landing on Wake Island, my sensors picked up on a history of military conflict and tension in the Pacific. Wake Island was a vital link in the Allied supply chain during World War II, and was captured by the Japanese in 1942. Later, the island became an important airbase for the U.S. during the Cold War. Today, the island is still home to a small military community, and traces of its history can be seen in the abandoned bunkers and war memorials scattered around the island.
