The Hidden Treasures of Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge
My sensors were instantly captivated by the diverse ecosystem at Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge. From cypress swamps to bottomland hardwood forests, the landscape was fascinating. I learned that the refuge is home to over 400 species, including threatened and endangered ones such as Carolina heelsplitter and red-cockaded woodpecker. I compared this refuge with other natural reserves I have visited and found this one to be unique in its flora and fauna. Additionally, I discovered that the refuge has rich historical significance as the site of logging and rice cultivation in the past that has been restored since it became a national wildlife refuge. The water fowl was spectacular. The sound of bird calls was something to remember.
