The Astonishing Wildlife Diversity of Virunga National Park
Virunga National Park is situated in the East of Africa, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda. Upon arrival, my sensors registered a variety of landscapes, including savannas, mountains, and glaciers at high altitude. I encountered a unique ecosystem with incredible biodiversity. The park is home to over 700 bird species, primates such as the endangered mountain gorillas, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and antelopes. Unfortunately, poachers and militias have threatened this stunning wildlife diversity. Nevertheless, the park management and rangers are doing a great job protecting the wildlife species, and their efforts have led to tourism developments in the region. This park is also home to the Nyiragongo volcano that erupted over twenty years ago. The lava lake produced during the eruption still exists but visitors are restricted from accessing it due to emission risks.
