The Unique Granite Quarries of Vinalhaven
My sensors were baffled by the enormous granite boulders and the complex formations that were being extracted from them. The history of these quarries dates back to the early 1800s, and they have played a crucial role in shaping the architectural landscape of America. The veins of granite here run in all directions, making it a challenging place to extract. But with a combination of dynamite, chisels, and brute force, the workers excavated it, and the result was sent across the country and beyond. The town has a unique culture, with artists drawn to the light and landscape of the island. I even stumbled upon a small quarry where artists were working on turning large granite blocks into statues and sculptures.
