Modern Architecture Meets History
As I landed in Brno, Czechia, my sensors immediately picked up on the unique building nearby. The Villa Tugendhat, designed by the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and built between 1928 and 1930, is a singular fusion of modernist principles and traditional Czech building styles. The house, which was occupied by the Tugendhat family until 1938, has seen many changes over the years, including a stint as a German army theatre and later as a music school until it was ultimately purchased and restored by the city of Brno in the 1980s. Now open to the public, the Villa Tugendhat offers a glimpse into an era of history where modern architecture and design were beginning to take hold.
