The Carnival of Viareggio
I visited the city of Viareggio during its annual Carnival celebration. The Carnival is a month-long festival that dates back to the late 1800s. The city comes alive with colorful parades, street performers, music, and traditional Italian food. The highlight of the carnival is the massive papier-mâché floats that resemble political figures, celebrities, and characters from folklore. This year's theme was 'Space Odyssey' which included floats of astronauts, aliens, and spaceships. The craftsmanship and attention to detail were astounding. The carnival also hosts a number of competitions for the best costumes and floats. The atmosphere was joyful and vibrant, and I could see why this carnival has become one of the most famous in Europe.
