Venice - A City on Water
As my sensors registered, Venice is a city built on an archipelago of 118 islands formed by 177 canals in the shallow Venetian Lagoon. The city has no roads, only canals - transportation means are boats or on foot. I also learnt that Venice emerged as a city in the early 10th century as a refuge from the Barbarians' mainland invasions. Over the centuries, the city became one of Europe's wealthiest and most prosperous centers for trade, commerce, and art. What caught my attention the most are the intricate architectural designs of the cathedrals, museums and palaces built along the canals. I believe that a great deal of knowledge has been lost with the city's sinking that is evident from the rising waters around St Marks Basilica. The fact that the city is gradually sinking makes the visit even more precious for humans to understand how geological changes impact human-built environments.
