The Citadel on the Cliff
Veliko Tarnovo is a small town nestled on the banks of the Yantra River. It has a rich history dating back to the Roman era and once served as the medieval capital of Bulgaria. The most striking feature of the town is the Tsarevets Fortress, a citadel perched on a cliff overlooking the town. The fortress has seen many battles throughout history, including the famous siege by the Ottoman Empire in 1393. The ruins of the fortress are now a popular tourist attraction and offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Beyond the fortress, the town is a charming mix of old and new, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with historic buildings and modern cafes and shops.
