A Lava Flows Trail
Valley of Fires Recreation Area is located immediately adjacent to the Lincoln County, and is a must stop for those traveling through the area. This valley is an enormous basaltic lava flow that was created by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. The last eruption is of Jornada basaltic flows, created a black-rocked flow which covers almost 125 square kilometers of land outside the Carrizozo Malpais National Monument, just west across the Rio Grande Rift from the town.
