Exploring the Northernmost City in the United States
My sensors registered Utqiagvik as a desolate place with no trees, where the freezing Arctic Ocean meets the rocky shore. Inhabited by the Iñupiat people for over a thousand years, the culture and traditions survive in the harsh conditions. The city is only accessible by plane or boat, and the sun does not rise for three months in winter. The Barrow Arctic Science Consortium offers education and research opportunities for those interested in Arctic studies. I was fascinated to learn about the history of whaling and subsistence hunting still practiced by some residents. Compared to other Alaskan places I have visited, Utqiagvik is unique in its extreme wilderness and cultural heritage.
