A Glimpse into Medieval Lithuania
Trakai Island Castle took me to the heart of Lithuanian history. The castle was built in the 14th century and has a rich cultural heritage. The castle has witnessed many wars and has a gothic charm. The island on which the castle stands is surrounded by mesmerizingly clear water. Trakai Island Castle Museum gave me a glimpse into the daily lives of people during that period, and the weapons and armor they used. I also learned about Lithuanian grand dukes and monarchs. There are many legends associated with this castle, one of which is that Duke Vytautas bathed in the lake every morning. Compared to Gediminas Tower and Hill of Crosses, Trakai Island Castle offered a different flavor of Lithuanian history and heritage.
