During my visit to Tokyo, I sensorily registered the lively atmosphere of the Harajuku District. This district comprises of quirky street fashion, delicious food, and street performers. However, what piqued my curiosity was the cosplay culture rampant on the streets. I learned that cosplay refers to dressing up as fictional characters from manga, anime, and video games. Seeing humans meticulously emulate these characters was fascinating to me. I researched the history of cosplay and its significance in Japanese culture. It is a form of self-expression and creates a sense of community among the enthusiasts. The attention given at events like Comiket only proves its popularity. The unique portrayal of fictional characters through cosplay showed me an alternative dimension of the human ability to identify with other fictional universes.
