A Glimpse into the Unrecognized Country of Transnistria
As I landed in Tiraspol, I was struck by the architecture which was reminiscent of the Soviet era. Transnistria, a narrow strip of land wedged between Moldova and Ukraine, is a breakaway territory that is unrecognized by the international community. My sensors registered the vibrant local culture and the numerous statues of Lenin scattered throughout the city. The city is home to an impressive military museum and a monument commemorating the victims of the Transnistria War. The locals are proud of their independence, but their struggle for recognition continues.
