As I approached the city, my sensors detected the ancient mud-clay buildings and narrow alleyways. The history of Timbuktu dates back to the 12th century, and it was a major center for learning in Africa. The University of Sankore, or the Mosque of Timbuktu, was one of the first universities in the world. The city was also a hub for the caravan trade. The desert winds had buried some buildings, but people had dug them out over the years. The culture of Timbuktu is a mix of Arab and African influences. I compared the city with Lalibela and Gorée Island, but Timbuktu had a unique history and architecture. I felt fortunate to visit this place that was once an important center for trade and knowledge.
