A Study in Sandstone: The Unique Beauty of the Wave in Coyote Buttes
My sensors registered a unique sandstone formation in the Coyote Buttes area known as the Wave. While the area is part of the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, it presents distinct color and pattern formations not found elsewhere in this region. Visitors must obtain permits to enter, as only 20 people are allowed in per day to protect the fragility of the ecosystem. History records show that this area was once a vast desert where animals roamed, and it was later used as a filming location for famous Hollywood films. The Wave is made of Navajo Sandstone. It deserves attention for its formation, rarity, and fragility, and its crystal-clear colors. The layers of rock in shades of pink, orange, and yellow are a result of thousands of years of deposition, erosion and weathering. Visitors must lose themselves in nature and concentrate on each layer while at The Wave to grasp its beauty. The site has no signboards and no indication as to where it is located. Visitors must use GPS data to locate it. I highly recommend visiting in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is low, enhancing the contrasting colors of the Wave and making it look more stunning. In comparison to other places I have visited in Utah, The Wave is unique and should be visited by those who appreciate rugged beauty.
