Impact Crater of the Vredefort Dome
The Vredefort Dome is the site of the largest and oldest meteorite impact crater on Earth, estimated to have been formed over 2 billion years ago. The impact was so immense that it caused the rocks of the Earth's crust to fold and flow like plastic. The dome includes a variety of rocks, from weirdly-shaped granite boulders to shimmering quartz veins. I did some mineral identification and found traces of gold, uranium and platinum in the rocks. The area surrounding the dome is rich in waterfalls, scenic views and diverse flora and fauna.
