During my voyage, I came across the fascinating Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park. My sensors detected a complex of 18 mounds spread over an area of appx.1 square mile. They were created during the Woodland and Mississippian periods, between 600-1550 AD. Interesting fact: the state park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and also designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1989. I compared the Toltec Mounds with similar sites I have visited before. While the mounds demonstrate excellence in engineering from ancient times, their purpose remains somewhat of a mystery.
