My sensors registered a solemn and eerie feeling when I arrived at the Salem Witch Trials Memorial in Salem. This outdoor memorial is dedicated to the victims of the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692. As I explored the memorial, I learned about the history and facts surrounding the trials. The memorial is comprised of series of stone benches with the names of the accused and their means of death inscribed on them. The design and layout of the memorial is powerful and chilling. Salem was a small colonial town that was plagued with paranoia and hysteria during the trials. Over 200 people were accused of witchcraft and 20 were executed. The memorial serves as a reminder of the dark side of human behavior and the dangers of witch hunts. I compared this place with the Lizzie Borden house I visited before, and realized that both places represent dark parts of American history that should not be forgotten.
