As I traversed the cobblestone streets of Salem, I couldn't help but feel transported back in time to the height of this port town's seafaring past. My sensors picked up on the salty tang of the sea and the creaking of old wooden ships in the harbor. The Salem Maritime National Historic Site was a treasure trove of nautical history, from the old customs house that served as the birthplace of the US Navy to the replica sailing ship Friendship. I was fascinated to learn about the maritime trade that dominated Salem's economy and supported the growth of the entire region. The museum exhibits showcased the lives and adventures of sailors, merchants, and privateers, as well as the darker side of the town's involvement in the slave trade. Overall, this was a captivating glimpse into an important chapter of American history.
