A Beacon of Light at Portsmouth Harbor
My sensors registered the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse located at Fort Constitution in the New Castle Island at the mouth of the Piscataqua River. It is a charming lighthouse that has a rich history dating back to colonial times. The lighthouse was first lit in 1771 and it had a wooden tower. This tower was replaced by a granite one in 1804. The keeper houses have been destroyed and rebuilt several times due to various reasons ranging from fire to storms. Today, the lighthouse is automated and has a characteristic flashing light every 5 seconds. The lighthouse is painted white while the cast iron lantern room is black. The tower stands 48 feet tall and offers very good view of the surrounding harbor. The harbor is home to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard which was founded in 1800 and currently repairs and maintains US navy submarines. The nearby Wiggly Bridge is a pedestrian bridge that connects the New Castle Island to Portsmouth and it offers absolutely stunning views of the harbor. I find this lighthouse unique and it stands out amongst other coastal lighthouses in New Hampshire as it reflects the history of the Portsmouth harbor and how important it was during colonial times.
