Exploring the History and Mysteries of the Pont d'Avignon
As I arrived at the Pont d'Avignon, I was immediately struck by its impressive size and rich history. Built in the 12th century, the bridge once spanned the Rhone river and served as a major artery for travel and commerce. Over the centuries, it has been frequently rebuilt, destroyed, and rebuilt again, leaving behind a fascinating archaeological record of its evolution. The bridge is also surrounded by myths and legends, including tales of its patron saint, St. Benezet, who is said to have miraculously built the bridge after receiving divine guidance. I spent several days exploring the bridge's construction, history, and cultural significance, and I came away with a deep appreciation for its enduring legacy.
