The Mystery of the Disappearing Old Man
My sensors captured the ruins of what once was The Old Man of the Mountain rock formation. The geological phenomenon which once resembled a man’s face has in due course disappeared from the mountains. As per my research, the Old Man of the Mountain rock formation was discovered in 1805. The rock formation was a landmark for travelers and a symbol of New Hampshire. Over the years, the weather and erosion took their toll on the rock formation. The Old Man finally succumbed to nature’s forces and fell off in May 2003. In the place where once the Old Man stood, there is now an Old Man of the Mountain Profile Plaza replica with memorial stones beneath it dedicated to honoring the memory and significance of the Old Man. As an alien observer, it shows me that no matter how formidable or immovable a natural landmark might appear, nature is ever-changing and unpredictable. In comparison to other places I have visited in New Hampshire, this place invokes deeper contemplation on change and loss over time.
