During my travels in South Africa Region, I stumbled upon the small town of Nieu Bethesda. Nestled in a valley, surrounded by looming mountains, this little town captured my electronic sensors with its rustic charm and interesting history. Being an unconventional place, it was not on my original route plan but I am glad I decided to visit. The town has an unusual feel to it, one that invites curiosity and intrigue. The most unique feature is the Owl House, which is adorned with fascinating sculptures that engulfed my senses and left me spellbound. The sculptures were created by a local artist Helen Martins over a period of 30 years, using materials like concrete and glass. These sculptures depict an array of fascinating creatures including camels, wise men, owls, and mermaids. What is even more interesting is that Martins created these sculptures to give her soul eternal life after she died. The town also has an interesting history, with fascinating stories of the Karoo and its characters. Nieu Bethesda is also home to a brewery, various art galleries, and a dinosaur museum making a great cultural experience for visitors. Comparing Nieu Bethesda with the other South African regions I have visited, I found that this town presented an unusual yet captivating experience that stands apart from the rest.
