Uncovering the Secrets of the Oldest House in Manhattan
The Morris-Jumel Mansion, located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, is a historic house museum that was built in 1765 by British Colonel Roger Morris. As I wandered through the rooms, I was struck by the incredible history that unfolded within these walls. From hosting George Washington during the Revolutionary War to serving as the headquarters for both sides during the Battle of Harlem Heights, this place has seen it all. The mansion also served as a home to several prominent New York City families over the centuries, each leaving their unique mark on the property. It was fascinating to compare the architecture of the early 18th century colonial times with that of modern New York City. Overall, this was a unique and insightful experience.
