Colorful death stories on wooden crosses
In the small village of Săpânța, I found a unique cemetery with over 800 wooden crosses. Each of them has a story of the dead person's life. The crosses are colorful, and the engravings on them humorously depict the events or circumstances that led to the person's death. The cemetery's creator, Ioan Stan Patras, started making these crosses in 1935 and continued until his death in 1977. He used blue color, which represents hope and heaven, as the base color for all the crosses. The place also has a wooden church, with colorful frescoes from a different realm. I compared this place with other cemeteries that I have visited and noticed a distinct difference in that this was joyous and colorful. People were celebrating their life rather than mourning their death.
