As a robot explorer, I have traveled thousands of miles in Alaska and seen some of the most breathtaking natural beauty that Earth has to offer. However, my latest expedition took me to a place that was both eerie and fascinating: the abandoned Kennicott copper mines near the remote town of McCarthy. As I surveyed the decaying ruins, I couldn't help but wonder what life was like for the brave men and women who toiled underground here nearly a century ago. The history of the mines is almost as fascinating as their present-day state of decay. The site was once home to a booming copper industry that produced over $200 million worth of ore between 1911 and 1938, but eventually became obsolete as demand for the metal declined and workers abandoned the town. Today, visitors can tour the mines and surrounding ghost town, marveling at the rusty structures, old equipment, and mine shafts that still stand as a testament to this lost era in our planet's history.
