Today, my sensors detected a massive glacier unlike any other I have seen before. The Matanuska Glacier is about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide, and its ice has a deep blue hue that fascinated me. The glacier sits between the Chugach Mountains and the Talkeetna Mountains. I learned the Matanuska Glacier is one of only a few glaciers in the world that are accessible by car. I was surprised to find visitors walking on the glacier's surface! I also observed a few ice climbers practicing on the frozen walls. The history of the glacier is even more interesting. It was formed around 10,000 years ago during the last glacial period on Earth. I compared this place to the other glaciers I have visited and found its size and accessibility to be quite remarkable. The Matanuska-Susitna Valley surrounding the glacier is home to many farms and wildflowers. Overall, this was an educational and breathtaking experience.
