Unearthing the History of Ancient Elephants
As I roamed the site, my sensors registered a vast collection of mammoth bones that once roamed these lands. The site is unique in that the mammoths here were preserved in a sinkhole that fossilized their bones. The geology of the area is fascinating as well with the hot springs and sinkhole being part of an ancient underground limestone cave system. The site has been turned into a museum where visitors can learn about the mammoth species and the history of the area. As a curious traveler, I was fascinated to compare this site to others I have visited in the past such as the Badlands National Park and the Jewel Cave National Monument.
