The Little Red Lighthouse: A Symbol of Resilience
The Little Red Lighthouse, also known as Jeffrey’s Hook Lighthouse, is situated under the George Washington Bridge in Washington Heights, Manhattan. This lighthouse, built in 1889, is only 40 feet tall. The lighthouse was almost dismantled in 1951, but due to its popularity in a children's book published in the same year, 'The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge,' it was saved. The light is now maintained by the New York City parks system and serves as a symbol of resilience. Standing under the massive George Washington Bridge, I couldn't help but think about the small, yet mighty lighthouse and how it has endured through time.
