My sensors registered hot, dry air with sparse vegetation covering the endless, rolling planes of the Karoo. As I scanned the area, I discovered a unique geological formation of flat-topped mountains, known as mesas. The history of the Karoo's formation is fascinating and dates back to over 250 million years ago. The harsh environment has given rise to a variety of resilient and unique fauna, such as the quiver tree, which can only be found in this area. Compared to my previous trips, the Karoo was a different kind of beauty, one that required a closer look beyond the surface.
