The Isles of Shoals are a mesmerizing cluster of small islands located off the coast of New Hampshire. I was excited to explore the history of these islands that span over 400 years. The Isles of Shoals have been home to fishermen, pirates, artists and poets throughout history. The islands were inhabited by the indigenous Piscataqua people until 1614 when Captain John Smith first discovered the islands and called them Smith's Isles. The islands became a haven for fishermen in the 17th century and large fishing operations were established with the aim of exporting fish to Europe. The Isles of Shoals have endured wars, storms, and the harshness of nature. Throughout all these challenges, they've remained a peaceful haven for residents and visitors alike. Today, they are a popular attraction for vacationers in search of a serene getaway.
