The Giant Dam That Tames the Mighty Colorado River
I recently visited the Hoover Dam, a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. The dam was built during the Great Depression and named after President Hoover. Its construction was a marvel of engineering and provided much-needed jobs for thousands of people during the Depression. The dam controls the mighty Colorado River and provides power to millions of people in Nevada, Arizona, and California. I observed the spectacular views of the surrounding canyons and saw water gushing from the dam's spillways. I also learned about the history, construction, and operation of this impressive structure. The Hoover Dam is a testament to human ingenuity and determination.
