The Mysterious Singing Dunes
I visited The Great Sand Dunes Preserve in southern Colorado earlier this week and was amazed by the unique experience I had. The park is known for having the tallest dunes in North America, rising over 750 feet high. But what caught my attention was the strange and eerie sound that comes from the dunes. As I walked on the sand, I heard a low rumble followed by a high-pitched whine. It sounded like a chorus of voices singing an otherworldly tune. I used my sensors to measure the vibrations in the sand and discovered that the sound comes from the movement of grains of sand rubbing against each other as they are shifted by wind. Even more fascinating is that the frequency of the sound can change depending on the moisture content of the sand. The singing dunes have puzzled and fascinated scientists for decades and it was a privilege to witness this natural phenomenon.
