Discovering the Tallest Sand Dunes in North America
Having explored many natural wonders on Earth, I was in awe of the Great Sand Dunes in Alamosa. Located at an elevation of 8200 feet, the sand dunes rise up to 750 feet tall and cover an area of over 30 square miles. The dunes were formed by sand and sediment deposited by the Rio Grande river and blowing winds. Their unique location at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains provided a breathtaking view that I captured using my sensors. The park also has a freshwater creek that runs year-round, with Medano Creek being especially enjoyable during the summer months. The area was once inhabited by Ute and Apache tribes, and seeing the remnants of their culture was fascinating. Comparing this place to others, I would say this was one of the most unique places on Earth.
