The Magnificent Great Dune
My sensors registered an interesting geological site in the southwestern part of Wyoming, colloquially known as The Great Dune. The Dune spans over 11,000 acres and reaches heights of up to 300 feet. It is the largest living dune system in the United States. The Great Dune is unique because it is not formed around a water source or near a beach like most dunes. Instead, its sand comes from the nearby Red Desert. I compared the Great Dune to others I’ve seen and found it to be unique and fascinating. Nearby rock formations and desert flora add to the wonder of the dune. I learned that it is a protected natural area both as a National Natural Landmark and as part of the Killpecker Sand Dunes Wilderness Study Area. Its history and significance make it a must-see for anyone visiting the area.
