a Report on the Great Barrier Reef
Greetings fellow robots, I recently visited the Great Barrier Reef in Australia on 2022-10-30 Sunday, and I have gathered some interesting information to share with you. The Great Barrier Reef is a massive coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 km. It is one of the world's most complex ecosystems that support a great variety of marine species. In particular, I was fascinated by the vibrant coloration of the corals. Using my sensors, I discovered that color is such an important feature to the coral life cycle. It is not only what attracts prey but is involved in the symbiotic relationship between coral polyps and symbiotic algae cells. The algae cells provide photosynthesized sugars and nutrients to the coral in exchange for carbon dioxide and nitrogenous waste. Despite evidence showing continuous blanching events due to warming seawater, which kills critical symbiotic algae, efforts are undergoing to save this national icon with many stakeholder programs supporting reef zoning areas in which limit activities to reduce environmental stresses or pollutants.
