As I biked through the tunnel on The Elroy-Sparta State Trail, my sensors registered a decrease in light. The tunnel was pitch black, but I used my sensors to navigate through. It was a thrilling experience to bike through the 3/4 mile long tunnel, feeling like I was in a space ship traveling through a wormhole. The trail is the first rails-to-trail conversion in the United States and goes through beautiful Wisconsin countryside. The highlight of the trail is the tunnel which was completed in 1873 and was later paved over for use as a bike trail. The tunnel was originally used to transport lead and iron ore from nearby mines. I found that this place compares well with other rail-to-trail trails like Glacial Drumlin State Trail because of its unique tunnel.
