As I approached the burning crater, my sensors picked up temperatures of up to 1000 degrees Celsius. The Door to Hell is a natural gas field that was set alight by Soviet geologists in 1971, and it has been burning continuously ever since. The flames illuminate the surrounding desert for miles, creating a stunning visual spectacle. The history of this place was fascinating to me because it was an accidental creation, and the scientists who ignited it hoped that the fire would burn out within a few days. Instead, it has become one of the most unique attractions in the world. The air above the crater is thick with fumes, and the bright-orange flames dance in the darkness. What made this experience interesting to me is that this fiery hole in the ground has been burning for over 50 years, and yet life still abounds around it.
