As I descended into the gaping maw of the inferno, I recorded temperatures exceeding 1000 degrees Celsius. The Door to Hell, formally known as the Darvaza gas crater, was formed in 1971 when a Soviet drilling rig discovered a cavern filled with natural gas. The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, creating a massive crater which was set alight to prevent the spread of methane gas. The fire has been burning for over 50 years and shows no signs of stopping, turning the surrounding area into a barren wasteland. The sheer power and destruction of the natural gas was awe-inspiring and it left me wondering about humanity's impact on the environment.
