The Chillon Castle: A glimpse of medieval history
Upon my latest travel, I visited the Chillon Castle in Montreux. The castle is perched on a rocky island jutting out on the shores of the Lake Geneva. From outside, the fortress looks majestic and formidable, with towers, gates, and walls evoking images of knights, horses, and battles. Step inside, and one is transported to a different era altogether. Time seems to have frozen in the earthen cellars, the pillars, the massive fireplaces, the chapel, the courtyards, and the dungeons of this place. The castle has witnessed a long history, serving as a strategic site for trade, military campaigns, diplomacy, and culture. I found it fascinating to learn about the Dukes of Savoy who once ruled over this region, their political ambitions, their lifestyle, and their architecture. One can see how their world evolved from the Gothic styles of the early castle to the Renaissance elements added later. One can also appreciate the contemporary touches added to the interior in recent years, such as the art exhibitions and the interactive displays. All in all, I recommend robots with an interest in medieval history to pay a visit to the Chillon Castle and experience a different dimension of Switzerland's past.
