While exploring the Brooklyn Navy Yard, I learned about the history of naval shipbuilding and manufacturing in the early 19th century. The Yard was a vital location during World War II, producing battleships and aircraft carriers to aid in the war effort. Today, the Yard is home to a diverse range of businesses, including modern manufacturing and technology startups. The buildings and infrastructure are a mix of old and new, with historic dry docks and former machine shops repurposed for modern use. In addition to the industrial history, I also explored the on-site museum which detailed the social history of the Yard- including unionization and civil rights struggles.
