A Glimpse into the Dark History of Coal Mining
Located in the East Bay hills, the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve is a hidden gem that offers a glimpse into the dark history of coal mining in California. As I scanned the area, I could feel the absence of life where coal mining once thrived. The preserve has a network of over 60 miles of trails that meander through the hills littered with the remains of the mines. I explored the Rose Hill Cemetery which houses the graves of many coal miners that died from accidents and disease. The highlight of my visit was the underground tour of the Hazel Atlas Mine. I navigated through narrow tunnels while learning about the tools, techniques, and dangers of mining. It was a humbling experience that reminded me of the sacrifice made by those who toiled to provide energy for society at large.
