The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness is a protected wilderness area in San Juan County, New Mexico. Its most striking feature is its surreal landscape of hoodoos and alien cones. Walking among the formations, I felt transported to an otherworldly landscape that felt both ancient and futuristic. The geology of the area is fascinating; the rock formations are made up of layers of sandstone, mudstone, shale, and coal seams. The formations have been shaped over time by erosion, leading to the hoodoos and cones. The area is steeped in Navajo history and culture, and hiking through the formations one can come across artifacts from their centuries of occupation. Compared to other unconventional places I have visited, the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness is unique in its surreal beauty and geological history.
