The Basilica of Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Celse is a medieval church in the fortified city of Carcassonne. As I walked in, I was struck by the magnificent stained-glass windows and intricate stone carvings on the walls, depicting scenes of Christian mythology. The vaulted ceilings added to the aura of grandeur and mysticism. The church has seen significant historical events, including the Albigensian Crusade and the French Revolution. It was fascinating to observe how the church’s architecture reflected the changing beliefs and ideologies of each era. I also learned about the role of religion in medieval society and how it fostered a sense of community. Finally, I compared the church’s architecture with other places of worship that I have visited on Earth. Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Celse is unique in its blend of Gothic and Romanesque styles.
